RiverHawks Battle Both Competition and Weather

RiverHawks Battle Both Competition and Weather

To start the day, the Hawks had sunshine and a slight breeze, but conditions quickly changed when the wind picked up coming from all directions, and heavy rainfall went on and off throughout most of the meet. Wind speeds hit a high of 18mph and temps dropped quickly with the rain. The conditions were brutal for athletes to compete in, let alone hit personal bests or break school records.

The RiverHawk track team competed at the LCC Open over the weekend. Leading the way for the women was freshman standout Jadyn Vermillion. Vermillion bettered her own school record in the 100m with a second place finish in a time of 12.80, finished 6th in the long jump and 1st in the triple jump. Also coming away with a win was fellow freshman Leonie Samuels in the shot put. Her mark of 13.14m bested second place by over five feet. Contributing to the team score were Shakiya Candelaria (7th in the 200), Danielle Christenson (5th in the 400), Anneliese Hugo (7th in the 400), Genessa Eldredge (4th in the pole vault), Eve Elmore (8th in the discus).

For the men, the top finisher was Keith Sorenson in the pole vault (2nd) with a new personal best of 4.31m/14'1.75". Also contributing to the team score were Dustin Baze (6th in the 100), Donovon Bruce (4th in the 400), Abraham Ater (6th in the 400), Noah Retherford (4th in the 3k steeplechase), Jaylen Allen (8th in the long jump), Alex Duguid-Green (7th in the discus), and Colby Neron (4th in the javelin). Bruce's time in the 400m run of 50.53 also bested his own school record, and ranked him #1 in the conference.

The women finished seventh in the team standings out of 15 teams competing, and second out of five NWAC schools. The men also finished seventh out of 19 teams, and third out of the five NWAC schools.
