The RiverHawk track team made the trip up to Oregon City to compete at the 2021 Cougar Open hosted by Clackamas Community College. Competing teams consisted of Chemeketa CC, Clackamas CC, Mt Hood CC, Treasure Valley CC, Southwestern Oregon CC, and Umpqua CC. The women's team won their division with a score of 75pts over second place Mt. Hood (53pts), and 3rd place Clackamas (48pts). The men's squad finished in third with 66pts, just four points shy of 1st place Mt Hood (70pts) and two points behind 2nd place Clackamas (68pts). In the team combined scores, the RiverHawks earned 141pts and outscored second place Mt. Hood by 18pts.
Coming away with event wins were Kristen Thomas in the women's 400m dash, Samantha Eichman in the women's 800m and 1500m, and Kaylee Hendron in the women's discus and shot put. The men picked up wins in the 400m sprint (Abraham Ater), 5,000m run (Konrad Raum), shot put (Carson Burris), and the triple jump (Jaylen Allen).
"I was pleasantly surprised today," said Coach King. "We were not at full strength today and several athletes did not travel, so to come home with a win is a good sign going into our championship month."
Next week the RiverHawks will see action at the Southern Region Combined Event Championships hosted by Lane CC. The rest of the team will have the weekend off before competing again on May 13th back at Clackamas Community College.
